Includes Teunis G. Bergen's office files which contained maps, surveys, title searches, field notes and correspondence; also account books and receipt books for personal and business expenses. Other papers include his letters received, genealogical notes, legal documents, school books, two diaries he kept while travelling in Wisconsin in 1850 and Canada in 1857, and two versions of his unpublished paper, "History of New Utrecht, Long Island." Original documents include land records, translations of Dutch documents, official town records, and papers for political, religious and educational institutions. Bergen's ephemera collection, covering the period of 1833-1881, consists of assorted circulars, broadsides, card advertisements, meeting notices, and news clippings for business, political, and charitable organizations in Brooklyn and New York City. Also included are two documents relating to the Revolutionary War, facsimiles of maps of property (1696-1723) of interest to the Bergen family and other assorted documents owned by Bergen. Papers of other Bergen family members include a diary, account book, a photographic portrait, a speech, and other miscellaneous documents.

Cornelius Bergen (1798-1865) was a farmer and owner of Bergen's Island in Flatlands. John C. Bergen, son of Cornelius (1826-1907), also owned a farm on Bergen's Island. Teunis G. Bergen (1806-1881) was a surveyor who resided on a farm in Brooklyn and researched Brooklyn history and genealogy of early Brooklyn families.
